I was born in Montreal, Canada and attended McGill University where I completed both my medical school and urology training. I was fortunate to be mentored by Tom Lue at UCSF during my fellowship, a time when novel diagnostics and therapeutics for erectile dysfunction were emerging. The identification of Nitric Oxide, its role in erectile function and the putative therapeutic role of PDE5i were still just research concepts, but the field was about to explode, as I headed home to become a consultant urologist back in Montreal at McGill (1993-1998). I started my own basic science research lab initially at McGill and subsequently at Western University in London Ontario (1998-present) where I continue to train basic / clinical research fellows from around the world.
My areas of interest include the effects of disease on erectile physiology, the use of duplex ultrasound in ED and Peyronie’s disease and surgical optimization of the PDE5i nonresponders. I have published over 240 peer-reviewed articles, 25 book chapters and have received more than 20 national and international awards for my research work.
I am most proud of my family, my wife and three adult children. In second place is the work I have been honored to perform with patients and with various medical associations and societies. I have served as Secretary General of the SMSNA, ISSM, Chair of the last major ICSM in Lisbon (2015) and President of the Canadian Urological Association. I have been afforded the opportunity over the past 3 decades to be involved in many international cutting-edge research projects that have allowed me to travel and speak across the world where I have met with many ISSM members and other researchers in the field.
Statement/motivation of why I am applying for President-Elect
My main motivation for seeking the position of President-Elect is to make a difference within the world of sexual medicine. At present the ISSM does a great job of disseminating sexual health information through a variety of platforms ( website/journals/in-person and virtual meetings) leading to enhanced clinician and researchers’ knowledge. While our patient outreach and advocacy initiatives are still evolving, they represent potential future important aspects of the ISSM.
The ISSM is uniquely positioned to champion the importance of sexual health as a basic human right. To facilitate the evident need for healthcare advocacy groups to partner with scientific organizations to promote world-wide improvements in gender equality, freedom of sexual expression and enhance knowledge in the field is obvious to many, but the ability to actually achieve these goals requires the financial resources, world-wide membership and credibility that few organizations possess. The ISSM is populated by thought- leaders, has global regional affiliates, industry partners, is financially sound and as we continue to expand our outreach and educational initiatives I believe we will become the go to place on the internet for credible sexual health information for people seeking answers, independent of gender, sexual orientation, nationality, language or location. We and all of our affiliate regional societies and partners are the group that has the best scientific sexual meetings, publishes the best studies and develops the breakthrough novel treatments and diagnostic tools.
It is because of these exciting novel potential impactful initiatives that I look forward to serving the ISSM membership as President-Elect effective September 2020. See you at the virtual event in September and at many future in-person meetings!
